A short morning flight to the lowveld and a lodge transfer through the gates of a private reserve on the Kruger’s unfenced western boundary — the animals cross freely; the crowds do not. Settle into your suite, lunch on the deck above a dry riverbed, and out at four for the first game drive, drinks poured in the bush as the sun goes down.

Coffee at half past five, then out with your ranger and tracker while the light is low and the predators are still moving. Private reserves may drive off-road to a sighting, which is how you end up six metres from a leopard the public park only glimpses. The day folds into the lodge rhythm — brunch, siesta, high tea — and out again at four.

This morning, the bush on foot: an armed ranger leads a slow walk reading tracks, dung and termite architecture — the small things the vehicle drives past. The evening drive ends at a surprise: dinner in the boma, a reed-walled circle around a fire, with the lodge staff singing and the Southern Cross overhead.

One last dawn drive, brunch, and the flight south via Johannesburg. By evening you are on the Atlantic seaboard, watching the sun drop into the sea from a Sea Point promenade bench — the same ocean, seven degrees colder, and suddenly there is a mountain in the living room window.

The cableway up Table Mountain on the first clear window of the morning, then the afternoon ferry to Robben Island, where former political prisoners lead the tour of the prison that held Mandela for eighteen years — the most quietly devastating two hours in South African tourism. A deliberately empty day, because the best Cape Town days are unplanned. Options on request: the Zeitz MOCAA contemporary art museum in a hollowed-out grain silo, a helicopter flip along the Atlantic seaboard, paragliding off Signal Hill, or nothing at all but the waterfront and a long lunch.

An hour inland through the mountains, stopping at a Stellenbosch estate for a cellar tour and a tasting matched with local cheeses, then over the Helshoogte Pass into Franschhoek, the French Huguenot valley that has become the country’s dining capital. Check in to a vineyard manor and do very little, on purpose.

The open-sided Franschhoek wine tram trundles between estates all day — hop off where the gardens or the tasting menu tempt you, hop on the next one when they stop. Non-drinkers do the same circuit for the food, the mountains and the estate gardens, and lose nothing. A long cellar lunch is booked at one of the valley’s named kitchens; the evening is yours.

A slow vineyard breakfast, then the seventy-minute transfer to Cape Town International for the flight home — carrying, in most cases, a case of wine with the export paperwork the estate arranged.
