Most flights from India land in the small hours, so day one begins with sleep. Once you are up, the old town is twenty minutes away: Shardeni Street for lunch, then the glass Bridge of Peace across the Mtkvari and Rike Park on the far bank. Georgian wine is poured by the jug and costs less than the soft drinks.
Highlights
The cable car from Rike Park lifts you to Narikala fortress and the Kartlis Deda statue — a woman holding a sword in one hand and a wine bowl in the other, which tells you most of what you need to know about Georgia. Walk down through Abanotubani, the domed brick sulphur bathhouses that the city was founded around. Evening on Mtatsminda hill, reached by a 1905 funicular.

East into Kakheti, where wine has been made in buried clay qvevri since about 6000 BC — a method now on the UNESCO intangible heritage list. You visit a family marani for a tasting and a supra lunch of khachapuri, khinkali and grilled mtsvadi, then the hilltop town of Sighnaghi behind its 28-tower wall, and Bodbe monastery where St Nino is buried.

North on the Georgian Military Highway, stopping first at Mtskheta, the old capital, for Jvari monastery on its bluff and Svetitskhoveli cathedral below. Then Ananuri fortress on the Zhinvali reservoir, and the Soviet-era Friendship Monument on the pass above Gudauri. From Stepantsminda a 4x4 climbs the rough track to Gergeti Trinity church at 2,170 metres, with Mount Kazbek behind it if the cloud lifts.
Highlights
Down off the pass and west along the Kura valley, stopping at Uplistsikhe, a town carved into the rock in the first millennium BC with streets, a theatre and a pagan sanctuary still legible in the stone. Continue to Kutaisi and, in the afternoon, the Prometheus cave — 1.4 km of lit stalactite galleries with an underground boat ride at the end.
Highlights
A last morning at Martvili canyon, where a short inflatable-boat run takes you between limestone walls that once belonged to the Dadiani princes. Back into Kutaisi for the Bagrati cathedral, then twenty minutes to Kutaisi International, which is the cheapest airport in the Caucasus to fly out of.

Indian passport holders need an e-visa unless they already hold a valid US, UK, Schengen or UAE residence visa, in which case entry is visa-free for up to 90 days. Tell us which you hold and we will not charge you for a visa you do not need.
It is a steep unsealed track and only licensed local 4x4 operators drive it — your own car stops at Stepantsminda. In heavy snow, usually January and February, the track closes and we substitute the Kazbegi valley viewpoint and Sno gorge instead, at no extra cost.
No. Half the day is Sighnaghi and Bodbe monastery, and the marani visit is as much about the buried qvevri, the bread oven and the supra table as the tasting. Tell the driver and the family will pour you grape juice from the same press.
Because the last two days run west, and driving four hours back to Tbilisi just to catch a plane wastes a whole day. Kutaisi International is also cheaper to fly out of, which is part of why this trip prices where it does.
