The Golden Fort Trail, 5 Nights

Met at Jodhpur airport or Jodhpur Junction and taken to your hotel in the old town. The evening starts at the Ghanta Ghar clock tower and works through Sardar Market — chillies, tie-dye, camel-leather juttis and the Makhania lassi at Shri Mishrilal, which has been made the same way since 1927. Mehrangarh is floodlit from about seven and best seen from the market rooftops.

A full morning inside Mehrangarh, still owned by the Jodhpur royal family and one of the two best-run museums in India. The audio guide is included and worth the full two hours — Moti Mahal, Phool Mahal, the palanquin gallery and the sati handprints at the Loha Pol. Jaswant Thada’s white marble cenotaph follows, then the Umaid Bhawan Palace museum with its 1930s Art Deco fleet. Late afternoon is a walk through the Brahmpuri blue lanes below the fort.

Five and a half hours west across the Thar, breaking at Osian for the 8th-century Sachiya Mata temple and the Jain Mahavira temple, both older than anything in Jaisalmer. The landscape thins to scrub and khejri after Pokhran. You reach Jaisalmer by late afternoon; the fort turns properly gold about forty minutes before sunset, seen from the Gadisar Lake side.

Jaisalmer Fort is one of very few living forts anywhere — about three thousand people still live inside the walls, which is also why the drainage is a genuine conservation problem. You walk the Jain temple cluster, the Raj Mahal and the Merchant quarter, then Patwon ki Haveli, the five-mansion complex a Jain brocade trader built for his sons in 1805, and Salim Singh ki Haveli with its peacock-roof upper storey. Bada Bagh’s royal cenotaphs at sunset close the day.

A late-morning drive out to Kuldhara, the village abandoned overnight in 1825 and left standing since, then 40 km on to Sam. Afternoon is a jeep run over the dune crests and a camel ride out to a ridge for sunset — go for the far dunes, not the roadside cluster. The camp lays on a Rajasthani thali, a bonfire and live Manganiyar and Langa musicians with kalbeliya dancers. Swiss tents have attached bathrooms and running hot water.

Sunrise over the dunes is worth the alarm — the light is flat gold for about twenty minutes. After breakfast it is a six-hour drive back to Jodhpur for your afternoon flight or the evening train. We build in a stop at Pokhran fort and a proper lunch break at Phalodi.
