Visa on arrival at Ngurah Rai and a fifteen-minute transfer to the hotel at Kuta or Legian. Kuta beach is a five-minute walk and the sunset there is the least complicated thing in Bali — soft sand, gentle surf schools, and the Beachwalk mall behind you for dinner. Get the children to bed early; Waterbom opens at nine.

Climax and Boomerang are the two big drops; Funtastic and the Lazy River keep smaller children busy for hours. Morning at Tanjung Benoa, the sheltered bay on the east of the peninsula where the water sports operate — banana boat, jet ski and a parasailing round each, all with jackets and a boatman. In the late afternoon you drive an hour west to Tanah Lot, the sea temple that sits on a rock cut off at high tide, and stay for sunset behind it.

Check out and drive to Bali Safari & Marine Park at Gianyar, which sits on the road to Ubud. The tram safari runs through Indonesian, Indian and African enclosures — white tigers, komodo dragons and a herd of Sumatran elephants — and the Bali Agung theatre show runs at 4 pm. Lunch is included at the Uma restaurant overlooking the lion enclosure, and you check in at Ubud by evening.

A loop north to the Kintamani rim for the Mount Batur view, back through a Luwak coffee plantation where the children can taste six flavours for nothing, and on to the Tegalalang rice terraces. The afternoon covers the Sacred Monkey Forest — hold on to your sunglasses and phones, the macaques are practised thieves — and Ubud Palace and market before dinner.

Banana boat from about seven years with a parent, jet ski from twelve as a pillion with the instructor driving, and parasailing usually from ten and above 25 kg. The operator makes the final call on the beach and refunds anything a child cannot do.
Yes, and we will refund the ticket cost at net if you tell us more than seven days before travel. Families with children under five often swap it for a Nusa Dua beach morning, which is calmer water than Kuta.
For five with luggage we use a Toyota Innova or a Hyundai Staria, both of which seat six comfortably. For six or more travellers we put on a second vehicle at cost, or a Toyota Hiace, and you pay only the difference.
