Your driver meets you at Colombo airport and heads straight for the centre of the island — about four hours through coconut country and paddy, with a stop for your first rice-and-curry lunch on the way. Check in near Habarana, with Sigiriya visible from the road, and sleep early: tomorrow starts before the heat does.

Climb the Lion Rock at first light — 1,200 steps past the mirror wall and the painted maidens to a fifth-century palace floor in the sky, before the crowds and the heat. Rest through midday, then an open jeep into Minneriya or Kaudulla national park, wherever the rangers say the elephants are gathering that week.

The Dambulla cave temples first — five caverns of gilded Buddhas under a painted rock ceiling, two thousand years in the making. Then south through Matale with a stop at a spice garden to see cinnamon peeled from the branch, arriving in Kandy for the drummed evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth.

Morning in the Royal Botanic Gardens at Peradeniya, under the giant Javan fig and the avenue of palms. Then the road climbs three hours into tea country, past waterfalls and pluckers on the slopes, with a working tea factory tour and tasting before you reach Nuwara Eliya — colonial cottages, a racecourse, and evenings cold enough for a shawl.

An easy sunrise walk up Little Adam’s Peak — forty-five minutes for a view that looks like the whole hill country at once. Then the long, beautiful descent south past Ravana Falls, tied by legend to the Ramayana, reaching Bentota by evening. The sea is warm; the trip changes gear here.

A morning boat through the Madu River wetlands — mangrove tunnels, cinnamon islands and monitor lizards sunning on the banks — then the turtle hatchery at Kosgoda, where rescued eggs hatch in guarded sand. The afternoon is yours: the beach, water sports at the river mouth, or nothing at all, which is also the point of Bentota.

South first, to walk the seventeenth-century Dutch ramparts of Galle Fort — lighthouse, churches, jewellers and cafés inside walls the sea still beats against — with stilt fishermen posted in the shallows along the way. Then the expressway north to Colombo for a short city loop: Gangaramaya temple, Independence Square, and sunset with the crowds on Galle Face Green.

A last hopper breakfast, a stop for tea and cinnamon if the flight allows, and a half-hour transfer to the airport. Nine days, one island, and most of a continent’s worth of things seen.
