Met at Biju Patnaik International and checked into a four-star in the city. In the late afternoon your guide leads the Ekamra walk through the old temple town — Mukteshvara and the Bindusagar lanes as the lamps come on, when the sandstone goes gold and the temple bells start. Dinner at the hotel.
Highlights
The Udayagiri and Khandagiri cave monasteries in the cool of the morning, Dhauli and the Ashokan edict before lunch, and the tribal museum after. In the evening a private Odissi recital is arranged with a city academy — forty-five minutes of the temple dance that was born in these sanctums, close enough to hear the ankle bells breathe. Dinner follows at the hotel.

If the budget is the deciding factor, the 5-night circuit covers every headline sight.
Comfortable, but honest three-star — the best rooms on that shore are lake-view resort rooms with AC and hot water, not the four-star standard of Bhubaneswar and Puri. We keep the night in the itinerary because dawn on Chilika from a private boat is the single best hour of the trip, and it is only possible if you sleep by the lake. Guests who prefer hotel polish over the sunrise can swap this night for a fourth Puri night at booking.
