Rhinos, Root Bridges & Living Clouds, 6 Nights

Met at Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi airport and driven to your hotel. The afternoon is Kamakhya Temple on Nilachal hill, one of the fifty-one Shakti Peethas and the most visited temple in the Northeast — allow two hours in the queue on a weekend, less on a weekday. At dusk a Brahmaputra sunset cruise runs past Umananda island, the smallest river island in the world with an inhabited temple on it.

Five hours east on NH-27 through Nagaon and the Jakhalabandha tea belt, the road running with the Brahmaputra floodplain on your left the whole way. You check in at a lodge on the Kohora range boundary by mid-afternoon. The evening is an Assamese Bihu dance at the resort and an early night — the elephant safari leaves before dawn.

The elephant safari leaves the Central range at 5.15 am and takes you into elephant grass taller than a jeep, which is the only way to get close to a rhino on foot level. Kaziranga holds roughly 2,600 one-horned rhinos, about two-thirds of the world population, plus wild buffalo, swamp deer and one of the densest tiger populations anywhere. The afternoon jeep safari runs the Western Bagori range, which is better for birds and the Eastern swamp deer. Two safaris, two ranges, deliberately.

Six hours south-west, climbing out of the Assam plain into the Khasi hills after Jorabat. Umiam Lake, the reservoir the locals call Barapani, is the standard stop — a viewpoint at the dam and a boathouse below. Shillong itself is at 1,500 m and considerably cooler; the evening goes to Police Bazaar and Ward’s Lake, and the Don Bosco Museum if you get in before five.

A long day south to the Bangladesh border. The Umngot at Dawki runs so clear in the dry months that a boat appears to float on air over the riverbed — this is genuinely true from about November to March and genuinely not true after the rains. Mawlynnong, billed as Asia’s cleanest village, keeps bamboo dustbins along every lane and a village-run sky walk; the single-decker living root bridge at Riwai is a ten-minute walk from the car park.

Elephant Falls on the way out, then two hours to Sohra, which the British called Cherrapunji and which still holds the world record for rainfall in a calendar year. Nohkalikai is India’s tallest plunge waterfall at 340 m, Seven Sisters falls in a row off the Sohra plateau, and Mawsmai and Arwah are walk-through limestone caves with fossils in the Arwah ceiling. The view south from the Sohra escarpment runs flat into Bangladesh.

Mawkdok Dympep valley viewpoint on the way out, then four and a half hours down to Guwahati airport. Allow the full time — the Shillong–Guwahati road runs through Khanapara and can add an hour in the afternoon. We schedule a departure after 4 pm, or an overnight Guwahati stay if your flight is earlier.
