Most Indians fly to Thailand twice — the second trip is the one that counts

Seven nights, three cities, one internal flight, and the circuit that actually works: Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket, in that order. A day-by-day account of the trip we run, with the experiences worth adding and the ones to skip.

The standard Thailand package puts you in Bangkok for two nights, Pattaya for two, and calls it a holiday. That trip exists, it is inexpensive, and it leaves out almost everything that makes Thailand worth the flight. This is the version that keeps the same cities but actually uses them.

Seven nights moves you through Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket in that order — the sequence matters because the drives shorten and the scenery improves as the week goes on. An internal flight on day five saves five hours on a bus and gets you to Phi Phi with energy left. The trip is escorted, Gujarati-speaking, and the food questions are handled before you ask them.

Day 1

Land, check in, float down the river

The tour manager meets the group at Suvarnabhumi arrivals, handles the SIM cards and gets everyone into the coach. The hotel is in Pratunam or Sukhumvit — fifteen minutes from the airport on a good day, forty on a bad one, and there is no good way to know which kind you will get. Drop the bags and keep your feet moving.

Evening is a river cruise on the Chao Phraya: the Wat Arun lit up, the Rama VIII bridge overhead, an Indian-style buffet on the deck. This is the right amount of effort for an arrival night. Tomorrow is a full day.

Day 2

Safari World, then a tuk-tuk night

Safari World sits on the northern edge of Bangkok and splits neatly into two halves. The morning is the drive-through safari park — the coach moves through open paddocks while giraffes look in the window and white tigers pace the fence. The afternoon is the Marine Park: dolphin shows, sea lion shows and an orangutan boxing ring that is exactly as absurd as it sounds, running on a fixed timetable. Lunch is an international buffet inside the park. Skip the studio photographs they push at the exit.

Back in the city by evening, you have two good options. The Bangkok by Night tuk-tuk tour — four hours, temples, markets and street food — has won TripAdvisor's number one Thailand experience four times; it is the kind of tour a friend would send you to. Alternatively, do the Floating Market and Train Market day if you prefer mornings; that one runs on day two for early risers and is done by two in the afternoon.

Day 3

Coach to Pattaya, Alcazar after dark

Check out and two hours south-east on the coach, with a stop at a gem gallery on the way — you are not obliged to buy anything, but the display is worth ten minutes. Pattaya hotel check-in near Beach Road; keep your afternoon for lunch on your own and a walk along the promenade. The sea here is murky and busy; do not swim.

Evening is the Alcazar cabaret: a seventy-minute costume and dance revue in a 1,200-seat theatre, performed by one of the most polished casts in South-East Asia. The production values beat any Bollywood stage show you have seen. Walking Street is ten minutes on foot but is adults-only after dark; the tour manager will tell you where the group meets for breakfast.

Day 4

Koh Larn by speedboat, sea and sand

Speedboat from Bali Hai pier to Koh Larn, forty minutes offshore. Tawaen beach has sunbeds included in the day; parasailing, jet ski and the underwater sea walk are all paid on the beach if you want them — no pressure either way. Thai and Indian buffet lunch at a beachfront restaurant before the boat back at four. This is the right day to switch off the phone.

One alternative worth knowing: Viator lists a full-day yacht cruise to three islands — Koh Phai, Koh Rin and Monkey Island — with snorkelling and a buffet. If the group has free-and-easy time in Pattaya, that is the one to book instead of a hired longtail and a guess.

Day 5

Grand Palace morning, Phuket by evening

Back to Bangkok in the morning for the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew. The Emerald Buddha is smaller than expected and more arresting than any photograph of it. Full-length trousers and covered shoulders are compulsory inside the grounds — the guards turn people away at the gate, and it is not negotiable. Get here before nine: by eleven the heat and the queue are both punishing.

Straight from the palace to Don Mueang for the ninety-minute IndiGo or AirAsia flight to Phuket. Transfer to Patong. The hotel here is a step up — four-star on the beach side of the road, dinner at the night market two streets back.

Day 6

Phi Phi islands, Maya Bay, full day at sea

The boat leaves Patong early. The day covers Maya Bay, Pileh Lagoon, Viking Cave, Monkey Beach and a snorkelling halt at Bamboo Island, with buffet lunch on Phi Phi Don. Maya Bay reopened with restrictions: no boats inside the bay itself, a daily visitor cap, and no swimming at the beach. The guide knows the protocol; stay with the group at the viewpoint and you will not miss it. Life jackets for all ages, a guide in the water with the snorkellers.

You are back at Patong by five. The evening is free — most of the group drifts to Bangla Road for dinner and the street show, which costs nothing to watch and is more entertaining than anything on a screen that night.

Day 7

Big Buddha, Wat Chalong, free evening

Half-day run: the 45-metre Big Buddha on Nakkerd Hill (dress modestly, the guards are polite but firm), Wat Chalong which is the most active Buddhist temple on the island, and the Karon viewpoint over three southern bays. All done by one. The afternoon is yours — Jungceylon mall in Patong if you need sunscreen and a charger, Banzaan fresh market two streets north of Patong Beach if you want the best-value dinner of the trip.

If you want one paid experience in Phuket beyond the group itinerary, a Thai cooking class in the morning is the pick. Three hours, four dishes, a market walk, and you carry the recipes home. The Phuket classes on Viator run between 8.30 and noon, which fits neatly before the sightseeing run.

Day 8

Check out and home

Breakfast, bags and transfer to Phuket International. The tour manager travels with the group to the check-in counter and stays until every bag is tagged through to India. Nusa Dua would say keep the receipts; Phuket says the same. Thai customs allows 200 cigarettes or 250g tobacco duty-free; Indian customs allows ₹50,000 of goods per adult before duty kicks in. Declare the wooden Buddhas.

What the trip costs: seven nights with three hotels, all transfers, the Pattaya boat day, the Alcazar tickets, the river cruise, the internal Bangkok-Phuket flight and the Grand Palace entry, from about ₹57,000 a person for two travelling together, international flights extra. The experiences listed below are not included in that price; book the ones that fit and skip the rest.

Best months are October through February, when Bangkok is dry, the Gulf coast is calm and Phi Phi is flat enough for a full day at sea. March to May is hot enough to make the Grand Palace genuinely difficult. June to September is monsoon on the Andaman side — Phuket takes rain and Phi Phi crossings get rough; if you travel then, shift the coast to Koh Samui on the Gulf side instead. The one thing to avoid: booking a single Bangkok hotel for the whole week and treating Phuket as a day trip. You will spend more on taxis than on the hotel you did not book.

Indian passport holders enter visa-free. The TDAC is compulsory and free — several lookalike sites charge for it, so file only on the Thai immigration bureau site. Thailand has publicly debated shortening the visa-free stay from 60 days to 30; for a normal holiday it makes no difference, but we reconfirm the current rule before every departure.

Questions people ask

How large is the group?
Between 18 and 32 travellers, and we do not merge two departures to fill a coach. The tour manager flies with you from India and stays through to the return check-in at Phuket.
Will there be Indian food?
Every included lunch and dinner has an Indian vegetarian counter — Bangkok and Pattaya have plenty of Indian restaurants, and in Phuket the buffet lunch on Phi Phi carries dal, rice and two sabzis. Tell us at booking if you need Jain food and we will arrange it separately.
Is the Bangkok–Phuket flight really necessary?
The road is over 800 km and takes twelve hours. Several cheaper circuits do it as an overnight coach, which costs you a night's sleep and a night's hotel. We fly it in ninety minutes and you get a full day in Phuket instead.
What is the dress rule at the Grand Palace?
Shoulders and knees must be covered and the trousers must be full length — no shorts, no sleeveless tops, no torn jeans. Sarongs are rented at the gate but the queue is long, so wear the right clothes that morning.
