Most people choose the wrong Maldives island before they even land

Four nights, two villas, one speedboat resort — and the single question that matters more than the room category. The trip as we actually book it, day by day.

The Maldives is 1,192 islands and about 170 resorts, and the model is unusual: one island, one hotel, no town, no traffic and nobody else. You do not choose a destination here so much as choose a single property, because for the length of the holiday that property is the entire country you will see.

The question that actually separates good trips from forgettable ones is not overwater versus beach villa — it is the house reef. A resort with a house reef you can snorkel from the sand, without a boat, is a different holiday from one that looks the same in photos but makes you sign up for an excursion every time you want to see a fish. Ask that question before you ask about the room. There is also an honest alternative the brochures skip: local islands like Maafushi have guesthouses at a fifth of resort prices, the same water, and a sandbank day trip. No alcohol and modest dress off the bikini beach — for many families that is a fair trade.

Day 1

Malé, speedboat and the beach villa

Velana International is a small airport and the resort host is waiting for you past baggage claim. No taxi queue, no signboard hunt — they walk you to the jetty and a forty-minute speedboat crosses the North Malé Atoll to the island. The water changes colour three times on the crossing: grey-green near the capital, then turquoise, then the improbable flat blue of the lagoon as the island appears.

Check in to a beach villa opening straight onto the sand. If you arrive before three, the room may not be ready — sit on the deck with a coconut and let the lagoon do the work. This evening skip the resort restaurant and eat at the beach grill instead: fresh reef fish, grilled with a chilli paste called mas riha rub, with roshi on the side. Watch the light go off the water and go to bed early. Tomorrow starts before breakfast.

Day 2

Reef snorkelling and a sandbank picnic

A morning dhoni takes you out to the house reef drop-off for an hour — parrotfish, reef sharks that want nothing to do with you, and the occasional hawksbill turtle working through the coral at its own pace. The guide points out things you would miss alone. Masks and fins are included; if you have never snorkelled before, the reef edge here is forgiving: five metres of sandy bottom, then the wall starts. A three-point snorkelling safari on a dedicated boat goes further, to spots most guests never reach.

Afterwards the boat anchors at a sandbank — a bare crescent of white sand in open water, nothing on it, no tree, no shade except what the resort brings. Lunch is laid out under a sail: rice, a clear garudhiya broth, lime, and a bowl of hedhikaa. Three hours, no phone signal worth mentioning, and then the dhoni comes back. This is the afternoon to do nothing but watch the horizon. Do not bring a speaker.

Day 3

Move over the water, and dolphins at dusk

Your bags move to the overwater villa while you have breakfast — the staff do this without being asked. The villa has a glass floor panel in the sitting area, a sun deck with two loungers, and a ladder from the deck straight into three metres of lagoon. Jump in at seven before anyone else is out. Snorkelling directly off your deck is better than most guided trips at other resorts.

Late afternoon, a traditional dhoni goes out for the sunset dolphin cruise. Spinner dolphins travel in pods of thirty or more in the channels off the atoll edge at that hour, and most evenings the captain finds them within twenty minutes. The boat does not chase — it holds position and the dolphins come. Back in time for dinner on the water, with the atoll lit up underneath you.

Day 4

A day with nothing in it, and dinner on the sand

This day is deliberately empty. Swim off your own deck. Take a kayak out over the reef flat — the water is knee-deep in places and you can see the coral through the hull. Read. The resort spa does a one-hour hot-stone treatment that is worth having; book it the night before. Skip the scheduled island tour, which covers the same ground you have already walked three times.

In the evening the resort sets a private candlelit table on the beach, away from the main restaurant, for a four-course dinner. The staff lay it and then leave. This is the experience almost everyone on a honeymoon or anniversary books, and rightly — the sky here, away from any city light, is the kind of dark you have to see before you believe it. Order the reef fish. Skip the imported steak.

Day 5

Speedboat back to Malé

Breakfast, then the speedboat back across the atoll, timed to your flight out of Velana. Resort check-out is at noon but the island keeps a day-use room for late departures — shower, change, leave the bags. If you have a few hours before the flight, the Malé city walk tour covers the Friday Mosque, the fish market that closes by noon, and the old waterfront in under three hours. One firm rule on leaving: coral, sand and turtle shell may not be taken from the Maldives. It is a criminal offence under Maldivian law, not a customs technicality. Leave everything on the reef.

What it costs. The four nights as we run them — one speedboat resort in the North Malé Atoll, two nights in a beach villa and two in an overwater villa, with all transfers and the sandbank excursion — from about ₹1,00,845 a person for two travelling together, flights extra. The Viator experiences listed below add between ₹3,000 and ₹8,000 a person and can be picked individually. Book the pieces yourself and you land near the same number with more coordination work, which some people prefer.

Best months are November through March — dry skies, flat seas and the best visibility on the reef. October and April work too, though the odd squall rolls through. Avoid May to September: the south-west monsoon brings heavy swells, seaplane schedules collapse, and several resorts close for renovation. The one thing to skip regardless of when you go: the overpriced resort dive course. Book a three-point snorkel safari instead and spend the difference on the private dinner.

The 30-day tourist visa is free and issued on arrival to every Indian passport holder — there is nothing to apply for and nothing to pay. The IMUGA traveller declaration is also free and is the only pre-arrival formality; sites charging for it are not official. Note separately that resorts levy a green tax and a service charge per person per night, which is a real cost and is often quoted outside the package price.

Questions people ask

Speedboat or seaplane?
This package uses a speedboat, which runs at any hour and takes forty minutes. Seaplanes only fly in daylight, so a late-evening arrival costs you a night in Male. If you want a far-atoll resort we will quote the seaplane separately — it typically adds ₹22,000 to ₹30,000 per person.
Is it worth paying for the overwater villa?
For two nights, yes. For four it is usually not — an overwater villa has no garden, no direct beach and gets hot in the afternoon, and the novelty settles by the second morning. Splitting the stay is the reason this package exists.
Can we get Indian vegetarian food at the resort?
Yes. Indian guests are a large share of Maldives arrivals and every buffet we book has a daily Indian counter with dal, rice, two sabzis and rotis. Jain food needs seven days' notice, which we will give at the time of booking.
Which months should we avoid?
May to July is the south-west monsoon — heavy squalls, poor underwater visibility and occasional cancelled excursions, which is why the May departure is the cheapest on this page. Late December to March is dry, calm and the most expensive.
